SC comments on mayor elections; BJP finally won the post of Senior Deputy Mayor in Chandigarh Municipality.

BJP won the election for the post of Senior Deputy Mayor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. The joint candidate of Congress and AAP has been defeated by the BJP candidate in a close contest.

Chandigarh: Bharatiya Janata Party's Kuljeet Sandhu has defeated the Aam Aadmi Party candidate in the election for the post of Senior Deputy Mayor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. The BJP candidate got 19 votes. The joint candidate of AAP and Congress, Gurpreet Bakshi got 17 votes. Therefore 1 vote became invalid. Therefore the seat of Senior Deputy Mayor has been won.

BJP nominated Kuljeet Sandhu and Rajinder Singh for the post of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Chandigarh. India Alliance of AAP and Congress gave a joint candidate. The names of Gurpreet Bakshi were announced for the post of Senior Deputy Mayor and Nirmala Devi for the post of Deputy Mayor.

Following the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, elections for the post of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor are being conducted under the chairmanship of Mayor Kuldeep Kumar. This election was to be held on 27 February. But the election was postponed due to the absence of presiding officer Mayor Kuldeep Kumar and the petition filed by Congress councilors in the High Court.

There are a total of 35 councilors in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. An MP has the right to vote. So the number of votes becomes 36. Therefore, 19 votes are required to win the election. BJP currently has 19 votes. A few days ago, 3 MLAs had changed parties and joined BJP. In this way, the number of votes of AAP and Congress increased from 20 to 17.

A historic decision of the Supreme Court

Earlier in February, the matter had gone to the Supreme Court due to irregularities in the election for the post of Chandigarh Mayor. The court gave a historic verdict. The Chief Justice upheld the 8 votes rejected by Returning Officer Anil Masih. Therefore, AAP candidate Kuldeep Kumar was declared the winner.
